When to Use
- Use L074 for the collection of a cervical smear (Pap test) when performed as a standalone procedure or as part of a general examination.
- Bill L074 when performing a vaginal smear for the investigation of suspected infection or pathology, provided the primary purpose of the visit is the collection itself.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L074 in addition to a comprehensive assessment code like A007, as the technical component of the smear is considered included in the office visit fee.
- Avoid billing L074 if the procedure is performed by a nurse or other staff member, as this code is intended for physician-performed services.
Billing Tips
- If you perform a pelvic examination and Pap smear during a periodic health visit, ensure you are not double-billing the procedure fee against the global assessment code.
