When to Use
- Use L078 for the collection of a specimen for a Pap smear when performed as a standalone procedure or in conjunction with an office visit.
- Bill L078 when performing a cervical or vaginal smear for cytology, distinct from the physical examination component of a general assessment.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L078 in addition to a comprehensive physical examination if the Pap smear is considered an integral part of the examination fee.
- Avoid billing L078 if the specimen is collected during a procedure where a different, more comprehensive tray fee or procedural code already includes the cost of collection supplies.
Billing Tips
- L078 is a laboratory collection fee; ensure you are not also billing for the laboratory analysis itself, which is the responsibility of the provincial lab.
