When to Use
- Use L092 when performing a routine venipuncture for diagnostic purposes when the patient is not an inpatient.
- Bill L092 when collecting blood specimens for laboratory analysis that are not part of a comprehensive office visit or procedure code.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L092 in addition to a consultation or assessment code (A007, A001) as the venipuncture is considered bundled into the visit fee.
- L092 is frequently rejected if billed on the same day as a minor procedure where the blood draw is incidental to the primary service.
Billing Tips
- Ensure L092 is only claimed when the physician or their staff performs the actual blood draw, as it cannot be billed if the patient is referred to an external laboratory for the collection.
