When to Use
- Use L094 for the collection of a cervical smear (Pap test) when performed as a standalone procedure or as part of a periodic health exam.
- Bill L094 when performing a cervical smear for diagnostic purposes in a symptomatic patient, provided it is not bundled into a more comprehensive assessment code.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L094 in addition to a general assessment code like A007 or A003, as the cervical smear is considered an inclusive component of those visits.
- Avoid billing L094 if the cervical smear is performed during a visit where a procedural code that already includes specimen collection is billed.
Billing Tips
- L094 is a laboratory technical fee; ensure you are only billing this if you are the physician performing the collection and the specimen is sent to a laboratory for analysis.
