When to Use
- Use L101 for the collection of a venous blood sample by venipuncture when the patient is not an inpatient.
- Bill L101 when performing a capillary blood draw (finger prick) for laboratory analysis in an office setting.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L101 in addition to a consultation or assessment code (e.g., A007) as the venipuncture is considered included in the visit fee.
- L101 cannot be claimed if the blood collection is performed by a nurse or technician employed by the physician or a laboratory facility.
Billing Tips
- Only claim L101 when the physician personally performs the venipuncture procedure.
