When to Use
- Use L180 when performing a routine venipuncture for the purpose of collecting blood for laboratory analysis.
- Bill L180 when the blood collection is performed as a standalone service, distinct from a physician office visit or consultation.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L180 in addition to an office visit fee (A007 or A001) as the venipuncture is considered inclusive in the assessment fee.
- Avoid billing L180 if the blood collection is performed by nursing staff or a technician in a facility where the physician is already receiving a global or capitated payment for laboratory services.

- Ensure the laboratory requisition clearly indicates the date and time of the collection to support the claim if audited.
