When to Use
- Use L181 when performing a routine urinalysis via dipstick in the office setting for a patient presenting with symptoms of a urinary tract infection.
- Bill L181 when monitoring chronic conditions such as diabetes or renal disease where a point-of-care urine dipstick is medically necessary during the encounter.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L181 in conjunction with a laboratory requisition for a formal urinalysis (G009) or urine culture (G010) performed at an external lab, as this constitutes double-billing for the same diagnostic intent.
- Avoid billing L181 if the urinalysis is performed as part of a comprehensive physical examination (K013) or periodic health visit, as the laboratory component is considered inclusive of the global assessment fee.
