When to Use
- Use L187 when performing a routine urinalysis via dipstick in the office to investigate symptoms like dysuria or frequency.
- Bill L187 when monitoring a patient's known chronic condition, such as diabetes or renal disease, where a point-of-care urine dipstick is clinically indicated.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L187 in conjunction with a laboratory requisition for a formal urinalysis (L031) on the same day, as this is considered double-billing for the same diagnostic intent.
- Avoid billing L187 if the urine dipstick is performed as part of a comprehensive physical exam (A007/A008), as the lab component is considered included in the assessment fee.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the clinical indication for the dipstick is clearly noted in the chart to support the necessity of the test if audited against the office visit fee.
