When to Use
- Use L188 for the professional component of a diagnostic Pap smear when the physician performs the collection during a physical examination.
- Bill L188 when a patient presents specifically for a cervical screening test, provided the service is not already bundled into a comprehensive assessment code like A007.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing L188 in addition to a minor assessment (A001) or intermediate assessment (A007) is a common rejection, as the collection fee is considered included in the assessment visit.
- Submitting L188 for a patient who is not eligible for the Ontario Cervical Screening Program guidelines will lead to automatic audit flags.
Billing Tips
- Reserve L188 for instances where the Pap smear is the primary reason for the visit and no other assessment code is claimed for the same encounter.
