When to Use
- Use L189 for the laboratory requisition of a complete blood count (CBC) when performed as an independent service.
- Use this code when billing for the collection and handling of a specimen that is subsequently sent to a laboratory for analysis.

- Do not bill L189 in addition to an office visit code (A007) if the laboratory work is performed during the same encounter, as the visit fee is intended to cover the collection.
