When to Use
- Use L196 for the laboratory requisition of a complete blood count (CBC) when performed as a standalone service.
- Use this code when billing for a routine hemoglobin and hematocrit test performed in the office laboratory.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L196 in addition to a comprehensive office visit code if the laboratory service is considered part of the global fee for the visit.
- Avoid billing L196 if the specimen is sent to an external community laboratory, as the laboratory itself bills the Ministry directly for the analysis.
