When to Use
- Use L315 for the collection of a specimen for a Pap smear during a periodic health examination or a problem-based visit.
- Apply this code when the physician performs the cervical cytology collection, regardless of whether the patient is symptomatic or asymptomatic.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L315 in addition to a comprehensive physical examination code like K013, as the collection is considered bundled into the global fee for the physical.
- Avoid billing L315 if the specimen collection was performed by a nurse or other staff member, as the code requires the physician to perform the procedure.
Billing Tips
- L315 is a procedural code and can be billed alongside a minor assessment code (A007) if the visit involves a distinct clinical issue separate from the Pap smear collection.
