When to Use
- Use L317 for the collection of a venous blood sample via venipuncture when the physician performs the draw personally.
- Apply this code when the blood draw is the sole reason for the patient visit and no other assessment or procedure is billed.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing L317 in addition to an office visit (A007) is considered double-dipping, as the office visit fee is intended to cover the overhead of routine procedures.
- Submitting L317 when the blood draw is performed by a nurse or lab technician in your office is an invalid claim, as the service must be performed by the physician.
Billing Tips
- If you perform a venipuncture during a visit where you also provide a consultation or assessment, bill only the visit code (e.g., A007) as the draw is included in the visit fee.
