When to Use
- Use L328 for the collection of a venous blood sample via venipuncture when performed by the physician or their staff.
- Bill L328 when a patient presents specifically for blood work ordered by another physician or for routine monitoring where no other assessment code is claimed.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not claim L328 in addition to an office visit code (A007) or a consultation (A005) as the venipuncture is considered bundled into the assessment fee.
- Billing L328 for a capillary finger-prick is incorrect; this code is strictly for venous blood collection.
Billing Tips
- If you are performing a venipuncture during a visit where you are also billing a procedure code, ensure the procedure code does not already include the collection fee in its Schedule of Benefits description.
