When to Use
- Use L391 when billing for the collection of a specimen for a throat swab or nasal swab for culture or rapid testing.
- Use this code for the collection of a specimen for a wound swab or skin scraping when the physician performs the collection personally.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L391 in addition to an office visit fee (A007) if the specimen collection is considered an integral part of the examination.
- Avoid billing L391 if the specimen collection is performed by nursing staff or other office personnel, as this code is intended for physician-performed collection.
