When to Use
- Use L419 for the collection of a cervical or vaginal Pap smear during a periodic health examination or a problem-based visit.
- Bill L419 when performing a cervical cytology specimen collection as a standalone procedure when no other assessment code is claimed.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L419 in addition to a comprehensive assessment code like A007 or A003, as the specimen collection is considered bundled into the assessment fee.
- Avoid claiming L419 if the Pap smear is performed during a visit where a procedural code with a higher relative value that includes specimen collection is already being billed.
Billing Tips
- Claim L419 only when the primary purpose or a significant component of the encounter is the collection of the cervical cytology specimen.
