OHIP Dermatology Code · Schedule of Benefits

When to Use

  • Use L531 for the excision of a single benign lesion, such as a skin tag or small seborrheic keratosis, when the procedure is performed via simple excision.
  • Select L531 when performing a biopsy or excision of a lesion that does not require the complexity of a formal surgical excision code like S060 or S061.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing L531 in conjunction with a minor assessment code (A007) is often rejected unless the assessment is for a separate, unrelated clinical issue.
  • Avoid billing L531 for the same lesion if you have already billed a diagnostic procedure code for the same site on the same day.

Billing Tips

  • If multiple lesions are excised during the same encounter, ensure you apply the appropriate multiple procedure rules, as L531 is typically subject to the 100%/50%/25% fee reduction rule.
