- Use L554 for the laboratory requisition and processing of a standard Pap smear (cervical cytology) when performed in the office.
- Apply this code when submitting a cervical screening specimen to the lab, provided the physician is not also claiming a procedure code that includes the specimen handling.

- Do not bill L554 in conjunction with a G039 or G040 visit fee, as the specimen collection is considered bundled into the office visit assessment.
- Avoid billing L554 if the laboratory service is performed by a hospital-based lab that bills the Ministry directly for the technical component.
