When to Use
- Use L555 for the professional component of a diagnostic Pap smear when the specimen is collected and prepared by the physician.
- Apply this code when submitting a cervical cytology specimen to a laboratory for interpretation where the physician is responsible for the collection fee.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing L555 in conjunction with an office visit code (A007) is considered double-dipping as the collection is included in the visit fee.
- Submitting L555 for a patient who is not eligible for OHIP-covered cytology screening will result in an automatic rejection.
