When to Use
- Use L599 specifically for the collection of a specimen for a Pap smear when performed in conjunction with a pelvic examination.
- Apply this code when the physician performs the cervical cytology collection during an office visit that is otherwise billed as an A007 or A001.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing L599 in addition to a complete physical examination (K013) is often rejected as the collection is considered bundled into the comprehensive assessment.
- Submitting L599 without a corresponding diagnostic code that justifies the necessity of the Pap smear will result in an automatic rejection.
