When to Use
- Use L624 for the collection of a specimen for a Pap smear when performed as a standalone procedure or in conjunction with a visit.
- Bill this code when performing a cervical screening test for patients who are asymptomatic or due for routine surveillance.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L624 on the same day as a general assessment code like A007 or A003 if the Pap smear is the only reason for the visit, as the assessment is considered included.
- Avoid billing L624 if the patient is symptomatic and requires a pelvic exam to investigate a specific complaint, as this may be considered part of a comprehensive assessment.
Billing Tips
- You may bill a visit code (e.g., A007) in addition to L624 only if a separate, unrelated medical issue is addressed during the same encounter.
