When to Use
- Use L706 for the simple incision and drainage of a single superficial abscess, boil, or furuncle.
- Choose L706 when the procedure is limited to a simple incision and drainage, as opposed to the more extensive excision of a cyst or lesion covered under Z001 or Z002.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing L706 in addition to a minor assessment code (A007) is often rejected unless the assessment is for a separate, unrelated clinical issue.
- Submitting L706 for procedures involving deep tissue or complex abscesses that require formal surgical debridement, which should instead be billed under more appropriate surgical codes.
