When to Use
- Use L730 for the excision of a benign skin lesion such as a dermatofibroma or epidermal inclusion cyst when the lesion diameter is 0.5 cm or less.
- Select L730 when performing a simple excision of a small, non-malignant lesion that does not require complex flap or graft reconstruction.
- Use L730 for the removal of a small benign lesion where the primary closure is performed with simple sutures, distinguishing it from the more complex excision codes like S061 or S062.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing L730 in conjunction with a minor assessment code (A007) is often rejected unless the assessment is for a separate, unrelated clinical issue.
- Using L730 for the excision of a lesion that is actually malignant or requires a wider margin, which should instead be billed under the S-series excision codes.
- Failing to document the specific size of the lesion, which is required to justify the use of L730 over higher-valued excision codes.
