L812
L812 – Cervical vaginal specimens
OHIP Dermatology Code — DIAGNOSTIC AND THERAPEUTIC PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Cervical vaginal specimens including all types of cellular abnormality, assessment of flora, and/or cytohormonal evaluation
When to Use
- Use L812 when collecting and preparing a cervical/vaginal specimen for laboratory analysis of cellular abnormalities, flora, or cytohormonal status.
- Bill L812 when performing a Pap smear or vaginal swab collection as a distinct diagnostic procedure separate from a general office visit.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L812 in addition to a general assessment code like A007 if the specimen collection is considered a routine part of the physical examination.
- Avoid billing L812 if the laboratory service is performed by a hospital-based lab, as the technical component is often covered under the hospital's global budget.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the specimen collection is clearly documented as a diagnostic procedure to justify the separate fee when billed alongside other services.
