L834
L834 – Histochemistry of Muscle - 1 to 3 Enzymes
OHIP Dermatology Code — Laboratory Medicine · Schedule of Benefits
A laboratory medicine service for the histochemistry of muscle tissue, analyzing 1 to 3 enzymes. This is a special procedure within histology or cytology. This service is claimable for the first one, two, or three enzymes analyzed. For each additional enzyme, see L835.
When to Use
- Use L834 when performing histochemical staining for a single enzyme, such as ATPase, in a muscle biopsy specimen.
- Use L834 for panels involving two or three distinct enzyme assays, as it covers the first three enzymes performed on the same tissue sample.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill L834 multiple times for the same patient on the same day; if more than three enzymes are tested, the additional enzymes must be billed using L835.
- Avoid billing L834 if the procedure was performed as part of a global laboratory fee or if the service was already included in a comprehensive pathology block fee.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the laboratory requisition clearly specifies the number of enzymes tested to justify the use of L834 versus the supplemental L835 for larger panels.
