N502
N502 – Disc excision (one level)
OHIP Otolaryngology Code — SPINAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Anterior decompression of the thoracic spine involving the excision of one disc. This service, under the 'Thoracic - includes thoracotomy' section, implies the thoracotomy approach is inclusive. It applies to a single vertebral level. For each additional level decompressed, see E360A. For a combined thoracotomy/laparotomy approach, see E362A.
When to Use
- Use N502 for a primary anterior thoracic discectomy performed via thoracotomy at a single vertebral level.
- Select N502 when performing a stand-alone decompression for thoracic disc herniation, as the thoracotomy approach is bundled into this fee.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing N502 alongside E360A for the same vertebral level is a common error; E360A is strictly for additional levels beyond the first.
- Attempting to bill a separate thoracotomy incision code is redundant and will result in a rejection, as the thoracotomy is inclusive to the N502 fee.
Billing Tips
- If treating an acute spinal cord injury, ensure you append the E383 premium to your N502 claim to capture the additional $255.00 entitlement.
