Performs an anterior spinal decompression of the lumbar spine involving the excision of a single disc. This procedure includes the laparotomy or retroperitoneal approach by the primary surgeon. Add-on code E360 can be claimed for each additional level decompressed. Add-on code E362 is applicable if a combined thoracotomy/laparotomy approach is used. See N508 if the approach is performed by a separate surgeon.
When to Use
- Use N506 for an anterior lumbar disc excision where you perform the laparotomy or retroperitoneal approach yourself.
- Use N506 as the primary procedure code when performing a single-level anterior lumbar decompression, reserving N508 only for cases where a separate surgeon performs the approach.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing N506 and N508 together for the same patient on the same day will result in a rejection, as these codes are mutually exclusive based on who performs the approach.
- Failing to append E360 for additional levels decompressed; N506 only covers the first level, and subsequent levels must be claimed separately using the add-on code.
