When to Use
- Use R217 for the surgical debridement of osteomyelitis where a saucerization technique is specifically performed to exteriorize the bone cavity.
- Apply this code when performing a formal saucerization of a chronic bone abscess or necrotic bone segment, regardless of whether an autograft or allograft is placed simultaneously.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill R217 for simple wound debridement or soft tissue excision; it must involve the removal of bone tissue to qualify.
- Avoid billing R217 in conjunction with other fracture fixation codes if the saucerization is considered an integral part of the primary open reduction procedure, as this may trigger a 'duplicate' or 'included' service rejection.
