When to Use
- Use R231 when performing a formal surgical sequestrectomy to remove a necrotic piece of bone specifically from the elbow or forearm.
- Use this code for the surgical debridement and excision of a sequestered bone fragment in the context of chronic osteomyelitis of the radius, ulna, or humerus.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill R231 for simple incision and drainage of a soft tissue abscess; it requires the specific removal of a sequestrum.
