R286 – Radial styloid
OHIP Radiology Code — MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Surgical procedure for radial styloid. As a surgical procedure, this service is eligible for surgeon (suffix A), assistant (suffix B), and anaesthetist (suffix C) billing (). Payment for assistant services is based on a calculation of basic and time units multiplied by the assistant unit fee (). Payment for anaesthesia services is based on a calculation of basic and time units multiplied by the anaesthesiologist unit fee (, ). Various premiums for age, after-hours services, and trauma may also be applicable.
When to Use
- Use R286 for the surgical excision or repair of the radial styloid process, such as in cases of refractory De Quervain's tenosynovitis requiring surgical release or styloidectomy.
- Use this code for open surgical procedures involving the radial styloid; do not use it for simple injections or minor soft tissue procedures which fall under different fee schedules.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing R286 alongside a hospital admission assessment is a common rejection; ensure you only bill the 'major pre-operative visit' (GP40) if the decision to operate was made during that encounter.
- Attempting to stack E420 (Trauma Premium) with after-hours premiums (E409, E410) will result in claim rejection, as these are mutually exclusive.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the surgical assistant (suffix B) and anaesthetist (suffix C) use the appropriate unit-based calculations (GP85/GP92) rather than attempting to bill the flat fee of R286.
