Femoral epiphysiodesis is a surgical procedure to address leg length discrepancy. It involves the surgical arrest of growth at the epiphyseal plate of the femur. This service is eligible for surgeon (A), assistant (B), and anaesthetist (C) fees. The assistant fee is calculated using 6 basic units plus time units. The anaesthetist fee is calculated using 7 basic units plus time units. When to Use
- Use R340 when performing a unilateral femoral epiphysiodesis to correct leg length discrepancy in a pediatric patient.
- Use R340 for isolated femoral growth arrest; do not use if the procedure also involves the tibia, as R341 (Tibial and femoral epiphysiodesis) is the mandatory inclusive code.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing R340 alongside R341 for the same limb will result in a rejection, as R341 is the more inclusive code for combined procedures.
- Attempting to bill for a second surgical assistant without prior authorization from a medical consultant will lead to automatic rejection, as R340 is not on the pre-approved list for second assistants.

- Ensure the surgical report clearly specifies the site and procedure to justify the use of R340 over more inclusive codes like R341 or R343.
