R482Single component knee arthroplasty

OHIP Radiology Code — MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

Single component knee arthroplasty (e.g., MacIntosh) is a surgical procedure involving the replacement of a single compartment of the knee joint. This procedure is eligible for surgeon, assistant, and anaesthetist fees. Various age-based and after-hours premiums may be applicable.

When to Use

  • Use R482 specifically for unicondylar knee arthroplasty when replacing only one compartment of the knee joint.
  • Select R482 instead of R441 when the procedure is limited to a single compartment and does not involve a total knee replacement.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing R482 when performing a total knee replacement; if the procedure involves both compartments, you must use R441 instead.
  • Attempting to bill R482 for a revision of a unicondylar knee to a total knee replacement, which is explicitly restricted by the Schedule and requires R441.
  • Failing to include E598 when a patelloplasty or patellar replacement is performed concurrently with the single component arthroplasty.

Billing Tips

  • Always append E598 to your claim for R482 if the patella was addressed during the same operative session to capture the additional fee.
