R736Aortic valvotomy

OHIP Radiology Code — CARDIOVASCULAR SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

Aortic valvotomy is a surgical procedure performed to widen a narrowed (stenotic) aortic valve. This involves incising the valve commissures.

When to Use

  • Use R736 for the surgical treatment of congenital aortic stenosis via commissurotomy when valve replacement is not indicated.
  • Select R736 when performing a balloon or surgical valvotomy as the primary procedure for valvular obstruction in pediatric or young adult patients.

Common Pitfalls

  • Do not bill R736 in conjunction with valve replacement codes like R724 or R725, as these are mutually exclusive for the same valve site.
  • Failure to apply the correct age-based premium (e.g., AGE_PREMIUM_UNDER_16_YEARS) is a common oversight that results in significant underpayment for pediatric cases.
  • Billing R736 as an add-on procedure when it is the primary surgical intervention will lead to rejection; ensure it is coded as the primary procedure.

Billing Tips

  • Always verify if the procedure qualifies for the E420 trauma premium if performed within 24 hours of a qualifying injury, provided the ISS criteria are met and documented.
  • If the procedure is performed after hours, ensure the correct suffix (B for assistant, C for anaesthetist) is applied to trigger the appropriate E400/E401 series premiums.
Provider Fee$776.05
Surgical Assistant Fee$232.38
Anaesthetist Fee$319.20
