R893
R893 – R893
OHIP Radiology Code · Schedule of Benefits
aortic arch – second surgeon
When to Use
- Use R893 exclusively when acting as the second surgeon for an aortic arch procedure performed by the primary surgeon billing R892.
- Apply this code only when the complexity of the aortic arch repair necessitates two surgeons of equal or near-equal skill, rather than a primary surgeon and an assistant.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing R893 without a corresponding R892 claim from the primary surgeon will result in an automatic rejection.
- Attempting to bill an assistant fee (e.g., E797) or an anaesthetist fee in addition to R893 is prohibited and will trigger a billing error.
- Submitting R893 in conjunction with R800 is strictly forbidden by the Schedule of Benefits.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the primary surgeon's claim for R892 is successfully processed, as the Ministry validates the second surgeon's claim against the primary procedure's existence.
- Verify that your operative report explicitly justifies the requirement for two surgeons to support the claim during a potential audit.
