Pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE) is a major surgical procedure involving the removal of organized thrombi from the pulmonary arteries. The service, as defined in the Schedule of Benefits, explicitly includes the components of circulatory arrest with hypothermia. The fee is claimable by the surgeon (A), surgical assistant (B), and anaesthesiologist (C), each with different payment calculations as outlined in the General Preamble.
When to Use
- Use R940 for the definitive surgical removal of chronic thromboembolic material from the pulmonary arteries in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH).
- This code is the exclusive choice for this procedure; do not unbundle the components of circulatory arrest or hypothermia, as they are explicitly included in the R940 fee.
Common Pitfalls
- Attempting to bill E002C (hypothermia) or E650C (cardiopulmonary bypass) in addition to R940 will result in automatic rejection, as these are inclusive to the base anaesthetic units for R940C.
- Failure to document the Injury Severity Score (ISS) when attempting to apply the E420 trauma premium will lead to audit recovery, as this is a mandatory requirement for the premium to be valid.
