S050 – Cryotherapy for treatment of pre-malignant or malignant lesions of oral cavity or sinuses
OHIP Urology Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Cryotherapy for treatment of pre-malignant or malignant lesions of the oral cavity or sinuses. This includes the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx unless specified otherwise. As a '#' prefixed service, when performed in a hospital or Integrated Community Health Services Centre (ICHSC), the cost of premises, equipment, supplies, and personnel is covered by the facility's budget. If performed outside these settings, patients cannot be charged for these items as per .
When to Use
- Use S050 for the definitive cryosurgical destruction of biopsy-proven pre-malignant lesions, such as leukoplakia, within the oral cavity or pharyngeal regions.
- Use S050 when performing cryotherapy on malignant lesions of the sinuses or pharynx where surgical excision is not the primary management strategy.
- Use S050 specifically for cryotherapy; do not use this code for simple cauterization or chemical ablation of lesions, which may fall under different procedural codes.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing S050 in conjunction with a consultation or assessment code on the same day without clear documentation of a separate, identifiable clinical service that meets the requirements for a non-procedural visit.
- Submitting S050 for benign lesions (e.g., simple papillomas or fibromas) which are not pre-malignant or malignant, leading to potential audit recovery.
- Failing to recognize the '#' prefix, which prohibits billing for facility-related costs when the procedure is performed in a hospital or ICHSC setting.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the pathology report or clinical documentation explicitly supports the pre-malignant or malignant nature of the lesion to justify the use of S050 over minor surgical codes.
- If the procedure is performed after hours or at night, ensure the claim includes the appropriate E409 or E410 premium to maximize the procedural fee, provided the criteria for non-elective or delayed elective status are met.
