S061 – Thyroglossal duct remnant
OHIP Urology Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This billing code covers the surgical excision of a thyroglossal duct remnant. The service fee listed is for the primary surgeon. When an assistant is required, their service is calculated based on 6 basic units plus time units. When anaesthesia is administered, that service is calculated based on 7 basic units plus time units. For a repeat procedure, see S062.
When to Use
- Use S061 for the primary excision of a primary thyroglossal duct cyst or remnant.
- Use S061 when the procedure is performed as an initial definitive surgical intervention, as opposed to S062 which is reserved for repeat or recurrent procedures.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing S061 for a recurrent cyst or secondary excision, which must be billed under S062 to avoid rejection or audit.
- Failing to apply the correct age-based premium (e.g., AGE_PREMIUM_5Y_TO_16Y) for pediatric patients, as this code is frequently utilized in younger populations.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report clearly distinguishes between a primary excision (S061) and a re-excision (S062) to justify the code selection during potential OHIP reviews.
- If the procedure is performed after hours, ensure the appropriate premium (E409 or E410) is appended to the primary surgeon's claim, as these are not automatically calculated.
