S068 – Pharyngo-laryngectomy
OHIP Urology Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Pharyngo-laryngectomy is a surgical procedure involving the removal of the pharynx and larynx. It is eligible for assistant and anaesthesia services. This procedure can be billed with additional codes for a concurrent thyroidectomy: E882 for hemithyroidectomy, E883 for subtotal thyroidectomy, or E884 for total thyroidectomy.
When to Use
- Use S068 as the primary procedure code when performing a radical resection involving both the pharynx and larynx for malignancy.
- Select S068 instead of M081 (Total Laryngectomy) when the surgical scope extends beyond the larynx to include pharyngeal resection.
Common Pitfalls
- Failure to append the correct thyroidectomy add-on (E882, E883, or E884) when the thyroid is resected, resulting in under-billing for the full scope of the procedure.
- Attempting to bill a second surgical assistant without prior authorization, as S068 is not on the pre-approved list for dual assistance.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the appropriate thyroidectomy add-on is submitted on the same claim as S068 to capture the full procedural value.
- When billing for the surgical assistant (suffix B) or anaesthesiologist (suffix C), ensure the claim reflects the correct base units (8 for assistant, 14 for anaesthesia) plus applicable time units.
