Oesophageal bypass from the abdomen to the neck, using a segment of colon or jejunum. This procedure is typically performed to restore continuity of the digestive tract following resection or for bypass of an unresectable obstruction of the oesophagus.
When to Use
- Use for definitive esophageal reconstruction using a colon or jejunal interposition graft following a formal esophageal resection.
- Use for palliative bypass of an unresectable esophageal malignancy where the esophagus is bypassed to restore digestive continuity.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill S099 in conjunction with E409 or E410 if claiming the E420 trauma premium, as these premiums are mutually exclusive.
- Failure to document the specific Injury Severity Score (ISS) in the medical record will lead to an automatic rejection of the E420 trauma premium claim.
Billing Tips
- Apply the E683 35% surcharge if the procedure is performed via robotic-assisted or video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) techniques.
- Ensure the surgical assistant's claim is submitted with the appropriate after-hours premium (E400B or E401B) if the case start time falls within the defined windows.
