Entero-enterostomy is a surgical procedure to create an anastomosis between two non-continuous portions of the intestine. This procedure is listed in the Digestive System Surgical Procedures section under Intestines (except rectum).
When to Use
- Use S160 when performing a primary entero-enterostomy as a standalone procedure, such as re-establishing bowel continuity after a previous resection.
- Use S160 for the creation of a bypass anastomosis between two non-continuous loops of intestine when no resection is performed.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill S160 in addition to a major bowel resection code (e.g., S158 or S159) if the anastomosis is considered an integral component of the resection procedure.
- Avoid billing S160 for an ileostomy or colostomy closure, as these have their own specific procedural codes in the Schedule of Benefits.
