S315 – Removal of intraperitoneal chemotherapy port by laparotomy or laparoscopy
OHIP Urology Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
This service is for the removal of an intraperitoneal chemotherapy port. The procedure may be performed using either a laparotomy (open surgical incision) or a laparoscopic (minimally invasive) approach. Assistant services are payable with 6 base units, and anaesthesia services are payable with 6 base units. Payment Rule: This service is not eligible for payment in addition to any other open or laparoscopic abdominal procedure.
When to Use
- Use S315 as the primary procedure code when the sole clinical objective is the surgical removal of an intraperitoneal chemotherapy port via laparoscopy or laparotomy.
- Use this code for port removal in patients who have completed their chemotherapy regimen and no longer require the device, provided no other abdominal surgical procedures are performed during the same operative session.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing S315 in conjunction with any other open or laparoscopic abdominal procedure will result in an automatic rejection, as the code is strictly non-additive.
- Attempting to bill a separate consultation or visit fee on the same day as S315 is generally disallowed unless the visit is for an unrelated condition and clearly documented as such.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report explicitly details the approach (laparotomy or laparoscopy) to support the claim, as the Ministry may audit to ensure the procedure was not bundled into a larger abdominal surgery.
- If the removal is performed under emergency conditions or after hours, ensure the appropriate E-series premiums are applied to the surgeon, assistant, and anaesthetist fees to maximize the claim value.
