S330Strangulated or incarcerated hernia - with resection of bowel

OHIP Urology Code — DIGESTIVE SYSTEM SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits

This service is for the surgical repair of a strangulated or incarcerated inguinal and/or femoral hernia that requires resection of the bowel. It is billed with suffix 'A' by the operating surgeon. This service is eligible for add-on code E726A for a repeat recurrent inguinal hernia where there have been more than 2 previous repairs. Services for assisting at surgery (S330B) and providing anaesthesia (S330C) are billed separately by the assistant and anaesthesiologist, respectively.

When to Use

  • Use S330A specifically when an inguinal or femoral hernia is strangulated or incarcerated and requires a formal bowel resection.
  • Use this code instead of S329A when the surgical procedure necessitates the removal of necrotic or non-viable bowel segment, rather than simple hernia reduction or repair.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing S330A for a simple hernia repair without bowel resection will lead to audit recovery; ensure the operative report explicitly documents the resection.
  • Failing to document the specific number of previous repairs when claiming E726A will result in rejection, as the add-on requires a history of more than two prior repairs.

Billing Tips

  • Ensure the operative note clearly describes the strangulation or incarceration and the extent of the bowel resection to support the higher fee compared to standard hernia codes.
  • Always verify the patient's age and the procedure start time to correctly apply the appropriate age-based premiums or after-hours/night-time premiums (E409A/E410A) to maximize the claim.
