S411 – Partial or heminephrectomy
OHIP Urology Code — UROGENITAL AND URINARY SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Partial or heminephrectomy involves the surgical excision of a portion of a kidney. As a surgical service, the fee includes pre-operative evaluation, the operation itself, and normal post-operative care. An additional fee (E792) of 25% is applicable if the procedure is performed laparoscopically.
When to Use
- Use S411 for the formal surgical excision of a renal segment, such as for a localized renal mass or polar pathology.
- Use S411 in conjunction with E792 when the partial nephrectomy is performed via laparoscopic approach to capture the 25% premium.
Common Pitfalls
- Attempting to bill a second surgical assistant without prior written authorization from a medical consultant, as S411 is not on the pre-approved list for second assistants.
- Failing to append E792 when the procedure is performed laparoscopically, resulting in an automatic 25% underpayment of the surgical fee.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report clearly details the laparoscopic approach to justify the E792 premium if audited.
- If a second assistant is clinically necessary, submit the required letter of justification to the Ministry immediately to avoid claim rejection or recovery.
