S541 – Diverticulectomy - male or female
OHIP Urology Code — UROGENITAL AND URINARY SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Surgical excision of a diverticulum from the urethra, applicable to both male and female patients. As a surgical procedure, this service has three components that can be billed: - Surgeon (suffix A): The main surgical procedure. - Assistant (suffix B): The assistant fee is calculated based on 6 basic units plus time units. See the Surgical Assistants' Services section of the Schedule () for calculation rules. - Anaesthetist (suffix C): The anaesthesia fee is calculated based on 7 basic units plus time units. See the Anaesthesiologists' Services section of the Schedule () for calculation rules. The service includes all common elements of insured services as defined in the General Preamble (, ).
When to Use
- Use S541 for the formal surgical excision of a urethral diverticulum in either male or female patients.
- Use this code when the procedure is performed as a distinct surgical event, rather than as part of a more extensive reconstructive procedure that might be billed under a different, more comprehensive code.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing a hospital admission assessment (e.g., A005) on the same day as S541 is a common rejection; only the major pre-operative assessment is eligible for separate payment.
- Failing to apply the correct anaesthesia extra unit codes (e.g., E021C for ASA physical status) results in significant underpayment for the anaesthetist (suffix C).
- Attempting to bill S541 alongside other urological procedures without checking for 'incidental' status, which may lead to the procedure being considered part of the primary surgery.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the surgical assistant (suffix B) and anaesthetist (suffix C) correctly calculate their time units based on the specific basic unit values (6 and 7 respectively) defined for this procedure.
- If the diverticulectomy is performed on an emergency basis between 00:00h and 07:00h, remember to apply the E410 premium to increase the S541 fee by 75%.
