OHIP Urology Code · Schedule of Benefits
Proximal cavernoso-spongiosal or other venous shunt for the management of priapism
When to Use
- Use S565 when performing a surgical shunting procedure, such as a Quackels or Winter shunt, to treat refractory ischemic priapism.
- Select this code specifically for the creation of a venous shunt between the corpus cavernosum and the corpus spongiosum or other venous structures.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill S565 in conjunction with simple needle aspiration or irrigation of the corpora, as these are considered integral to the initial management and not the shunt procedure itself.
- Avoid billing S565 if the procedure is limited to a distal shunt (e.g., Al-Ghorab), which may be subject to different surgical coding interpretations depending on the specific operative report details.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report explicitly details the creation of the shunt, as the Ministry may audit to verify the procedure moved beyond simple aspiration to a formal surgical shunt.
