S591 – Orchidopexy for undescended testis
OHIP Urology Code — MALE GENITAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Orchidopexy for undescended testis, any type, one or two stages to include hernia repair where required. When performed laparoscopically, premium E792 may be added for a 25% increase to the surgical fee. The fee for this service is paid to the surgeon (A suffix), with separate unit-based fees for the surgical assistant (B suffix) and anaesthesiologist (C suffix).
When to Use
- Use S591 for the surgical correction of an undescended testis, which inherently includes any required hernia repair as part of the global fee.
- Select S591 for both single-stage and two-stage orchidopexy procedures, as the code description explicitly covers both approaches.
Common Pitfalls
- Do not bill a separate hernia repair code (e.g., S593) alongside S591; the hernia repair is considered inclusive to the orchidopexy fee.
- Failure to append E792 when the procedure is performed laparoscopically results in a 25% underpayment of the surgical fee.
Billing Tips
- Always verify the patient's exact age at the time of the procedure to ensure the correct age-based premium is applied, as these are calculated as a percentage of the base S591 fee.
- Ensure the laparoscopic approach is clearly documented in the operative report to support the mandatory use of E792.
