S703
S703 – Vulvectomy - simple
OHIP Urology Code — FEMALE GENITAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
Simple vulvectomy is the surgical removal of the vulva. This procedure has 8 basic units allocated for surgical assistance and 8 basic units allocated for anaesthesia services. Payment for assistant and anaesthetist services is calculated based on these basic units plus time units as described in the General Preamble (, ).
When to Use
- Use S703 for the excision of the vulva when the procedure is limited to the superficial tissues and does not involve deep tissue or radical resection.
- Select S703 when performing a simple vulvectomy for benign conditions such as intractable lichen sclerosus or high-grade vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) that does not require radical margins.
Common Pitfalls
- Avoid billing S703 alongside more extensive vulvar procedures; if a radical vulvectomy is performed, S703 is considered included and should not be billed separately.
- Do not attempt to bill S703 with minor local excisions (e.g., S701) as the Ministry considers these bundled into the primary surgical procedure.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the operative report clearly distinguishes the procedure as a simple vulvectomy to prevent audit reclassification to a more minor excision code.
- When performing multiple procedures, remember that the basic units for the assistant and anaesthetist are restricted to the major procedure only per GP85 and GP93.
