S785 – Induced abortion after 14 weeks of gestation
OHIP Urology Code — FEMALE GENITAL SURGICAL PROCEDURES · Schedule of Benefits
An induced abortion performed by any surgical technique when the patient's gestation is confirmed to be after 14 weeks. This is a surgical procedure and includes anaesthesia services. The fee for the surgeon is claimed with suffix 'A', and the anaesthesiologist with suffix 'C'. See the Anaesthesiologists' Services section starting on : for details on unit calculation.
When to Use
- Use S785 when performing a surgical abortion for a pregnancy confirmed by ultrasound to be beyond 14 weeks gestation.
- Use this code for surgical termination procedures where the fee includes the anaesthesia component, distinguishing it from earlier gestation procedures like S752 or S768.
Common Pitfalls
- Failure to document the ultrasound-confirmed gestational age in the patient record, which is a mandatory requirement for this code.
- Attempting to bill S785B for a surgical assistant without prior authorization via M400B, as assistant fees are not automatically payable for this procedure.
- Incorrectly billing S785 for procedures at or below 14 weeks, which should be claimed under the appropriate lower-gestation surgical codes.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the surgeon claims with suffix 'A' and the anaesthesiologist claims with suffix 'C' to ensure correct processing of the bundled anaesthesia fee.
- If an assistant is medically necessary, submit the claim with M400B accompanied by a formal letter from the surgeon justifying the requirement to the Ministry for manual review.
