W002Subsequent visits - Chronic care or convalescent hospital

OHIP Neurology Code — CONSULTATIONS AND VISITS · Schedule of Benefits

A subsequent visit is any routine assessment following the patient's admission to a long-term care institution. These services apply to patients in chronic care hospitals, convalescent hospitals, nursing homes, homes for the aged and designated chronic or convalescent care beds in hospitals other than patients in designated palliative care beds. As an assessment, it includes a direct physical encounter, history taking, physical examination, and arranging any necessary follow-up care or procedures. See and for full details.

When to Use

  • Use W002 for routine subsequent visits to patients in chronic care or convalescent facilities when you are not the Most Responsible Physician (MRP) claiming the monthly management fee.
  • Use W002 for visits to patients in chronic care beds when the visit does not meet the criteria for a Special Visit Premium (SVP), which would otherwise require an 'A' prefix code.

Common Pitfalls

  • Billing W002 in the same month you have claimed W010 for the same patient, as W002 is considered a component of the monthly management fee for the MRP.
  • Attempting to claim W002 for patients in designated palliative care beds, which are excluded from the 'W' prefix assessment structure.

Billing Tips

  • If you are the MRP and perform a visit that qualifies for a Special Visit Premium, bill an 'A' prefix assessment code instead of W002 to ensure the premium is eligible for payment.
