X003 – Sella turcica
OHIP Laboratory Code — DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGY · Schedule of Benefits
A radiological examination (X-ray) specifically of the sella turcica. This service is performed when a broader examination of the skull is not required. As a diagnostic radiology service, it is comprised of two components: a technical component (H-fee) for the performance of the imaging, and a professional component (P-fee) for the interpretation and report. The description specifies that it is performed 'when skull not examined', indicating it should not be billed with other skull X-ray services. See page of the schedule for fee details.
When to Use
- Use X003 when specifically investigating the sella turcica for suspected pathology like a pituitary adenoma in a patient where a full skull series is not clinically indicated.
- Use X003 for focused imaging of the sella turcica when you intend to bill for a targeted view rather than the broader, more comprehensive X001 skull examination.
Common Pitfalls
- Billing X003 in conjunction with X001 or X009 will result in an automatic rejection as these codes are mutually exclusive.
- Attempting to bill X003 for dental or oral-maxillofacial imaging is an error, as these are not insured benefits under this code.
Billing Tips
- Ensure the referral explicitly requests a sella turcica view to justify the exclusion of a full skull series, as this is the primary criterion for using X003 over X001.
